Finding The Perfect Major
It does not matter if a college student is a recent high school graduate or an adult returning many years later, the one question every student is most often asked is: “What is your college major?” When college students are asked this question chances are they may not really know what the answer is. This is especially true for those who just enrolled in classes for the first time.
Though some students who know right away what they want to major in, there are others who need a little assistance finding the perfect course of study.
Test the waters
College students unsure of what they want to major in should take the time and test the waters. This means enrolling in a variety of different classes to see which one peaks their interest the most. Students should look into taking classes that challenge them to see if it might be a subject of interest.
Take the required courses
Many college freshman and returning adult students choose to take those classes that are mandatory to graduate before selecting a college major. Students should start off their college path by taking those classes that are required. Most colleges require math, science, English, art, foreign language and social studies in order to graduate. One of these classes may spark some interest and could be the student’s major.
Look for strengths
Undeclared students should make a list of their strengths. This includes listing if they are good at, including being creative, a good listener, analytical or adventurous. Each one of these characteristics will help students find what major is best for them.
Ask around
Students still seeking a major should ask around and see what other students are interested in. Find out why different students like a class or hate it. Speak to counselors and professors to determine what types of jobs are available after graduation for different college majors.

Because this is what they will use to get a job after graduation, it is important they choose something that is of interest to them. By taking their time, students will be happy with their decision and know it is the right path to take.
